Building a New Management Team and Reviewing the Company’s Strategic Focus

The Problem

A 30-year-old leader in the domestic gas industry elected to ‘renew’ itself to face the challenges of an increasingly fragmented and competitive market.

A decision was made to first tackle the task of building a new management team and then to perform a thorough review of the company’s strategic focus.

An important factor in determining the success of renewal efforts would be the speed with which the new management team could be assembled and welded into a cohesive unit, despite the potentially diverse background of prospective members.

The Solution

Human Edge Limited was invited to provide professional assistance to the CEO in human resource-related areas of the renewal program.

Working with specifications provided by the CEO, Human Edge identified and recruited three top executives from outside the energy industry to fill key management positions.

To help blend new and old members of the management team, Human Edge then organized a three-day off-site Vision, Strategy and Team-Building workshop for top management. Major objectives of the program included commencing the process of creating a shared vision of the future, examining the company’s strategic options and developing a future strategic profile (F.S.P). Team-building and action planning activities were also an important part of the program.

The Results

Despite the ongoing problems in the company’s business environment, the management team now has a more cohesive approach to problem-solving, and a clear strategy for the short to medium-term future has emerged. Teamwork and team spirit have also noticeably improved.
